Agreed, yet another startling dose of just how messed up some elements of humanity are. I couldn’t not watch the video (which I saw here), and was glad it wasn’t too bloody. What a terrible event, ages 24 and 27, a lot of life ahead of them.

I won’t get into the gun debate, I’ll leave that for Gawker. But on my 3-week excursion to Europe, I never saw stories like this. Not that bad things don’t happen, but these bad things don’t happen nearly as often.

Here’s a little more WTF, we had some lunatic who stabbed someone, go on a rampage hitting 5 pedestrians and a guy on a motorcycle in different places around town. Luckily though, this guy is in custody now.

This is insane. My thoughts are with the families and friends of everyone involved.

It’s not right that I should be scared to continue working at a movie theater, but when there’s at least one senseless mass shooting seemingly every week in this country, well... something needs to be done about this and fast.

Regardless your stance on the control of new guns, there are far more out there already than there are responsible gun owners, and we really need to crack down on getting rid of those that are unlicensed, unregistered, or outright illegal. It’s a start, at least.

Agreed. Rifles are easier and more practical for target shooting and hunting, and as a bonus they’re difficult to conceal. Handguns’ only purpose is to keep hidden until it’s time to shoot at another person with a handgun. No one would ever feel the need to have one if they didn’t exist in the first place.

Probably wasn’t, but that’s not going to stop someone. That’s just like asking how someone so unstable was allowed to kill two people. They weren’t allowed to, they just did it. Just like the guy blowing buy you at 85, they’re not allowed to do that either, but when has that stopped anybody?

Even bigger WTF: She was reporting what is usually seen as a mundane, regular, bread-n-butter news story. They never meant any harm, never went too daring, and then some bloke shoots them for God knows what reason.

And IIRC, you don’t shoot a reporter and his/her cameraman or the person a reporter interviews, EVER.

Whoever the gunman is must be caught, prosecuted with a trial on live stream, and shamed for some 60 days on the Net by a whole lot of people for killing an innocent reporter.

And to everyone, including me, a command: If you shoot a person who does no harm to you for no reason and you shoot that person dead (or worse, like rape-slay), please, turn yourself in and atone, and also request for the worst non-lethal punishment the state and every single person can give you: humiliation by everyone .

Do request, however, to spare your children from the fallout of said humiliation, lest they grow up to resent and kill because their dad/mom was humiliated by people for killing an innocent person (or rape-slay).

Easy answer: some nut job with a gun.

The hard answer: increasing wealth disparity, reduced protections for labour, crumbling education system...results in a more frustrated, alienated population with more people who feel they have no other option for taking out their frustrations but to resort to violence.

If this was indeed a disgruntled ex-employee of the station, what’s his story? How do we prevent this in future?

But thats different, killing is part of troubled decision making, it requires no other element other than will. The fact that someone with such a will was allowed to buy/find/get a gun is a completely different thing. Same thing with a speeding car, it serves many purposes other than speeding. A gun is only for killing.

You just changed your whole argument there. You asked “why was he allowed to get a gun”, now your asking “why is anyone allowed to get a gun”.

What does a vehicles purpose matter when the person operating it does something they’re not “allowed” to do? Laws only stop the law abiding from doing something. The fact that murder is already illegal apparently doesn’t matter, so what makes you think they’d follow any other laws?

I mean, unless I was going to an active war zone and/or crime scene (Baltimore/Ferguson for recent examples), I don’t think I’d be any more concerned about it than going to the grocery store. It seemed like a fairly mundane interview, you wouldn’t think there’d be any danger at all (aside from the random acts, those are kinda tough to predict). Just seems to be an odd thing to worry about with almost no reason to.
